Toyota Motor Corp. introduced a new version of its Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) , the first redesign of the world?s best-selling car since 2000. The model generates a fifth of Toyota?s annual auto sales; Toyota has sold more than 31 million Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent)s worldwide since introducing it in 1966. The new version, on sale now in Japan, will go on sale in the U.S. in 2008. "The Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) is basically Toyota?s bread and butter," said Yoshihiro Okumura, a general manager at Chiba-gin Asset Management Co., which manages the equivalent of $365 million. "The automaker?s success is led by models such as the Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent)." Toyota?s smaller cars have helped it win market share from General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. in the U.S. this year. Globally, Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) sales rose 8 percent to 1.39 million last year, nearly 10 times the 175,000 gasoline-electric Prius hybrids sold in the same period. The company expects to sell 12,000 Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent)s a month in Japan, where it will cost between 1.4 million yen ($11,700) and 2.3 million yen. The vehicle accounted for 19 percent of Toyota?s unit sales in 2005. The company declined to give a breakdown by revenue. The new Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) will help Toyota meet its global target of selling 9.8 million cars and trucks in 2008. GM sold 9.17 million vehicles in 2005 and has been cutting production and closing plants in North America this year as its U.S. sales drop. "Toyota?s Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) has a major impact on its profits and volume," said Yasuhiro Matsumoto, a senior analyst at Shinsei Securities Co. The Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) is Japan?s best-selling vehicle. The car comes with either a 1.5- or 1.8-liter engine, and has a narrow grille, low sloping roof and unobtrusive trunk. It is built on the same chassis and wheelbase as its predecessor, which it closely resembles. "The company has to be very careful about taking major risks with this model," said Ashvin Chotai, a London-based automotive analyst for Global Insight Inc. "The Corolla Station Wagon (you may rent) is a huge model for Toyota both in Japan and across the world."
